Preventing Plumbing Leaks

Water leaks in the home are never a good thing. Even a minor leak in a plumbing pipe can be a sign that the pipe is under strain and about to break. If a pipe breaks, you will have to deal with flooding in your home and possible mold growth. Take these steps to help prevent plumbing leaks in your home.

Check Water Pressure to Prevent Plumbing Leaks

Water pressure above 80 psi is considered high. Have a plumber test your water supply’s pressure. If they see numbers above this range, have them investigate potential causes to make sure there is no unnecessary strain on your pipes.

Use a Water Softener

If your water naturally has high amounts of mineral deposits that make the water hard, invest in a water softener. Without a water softener, mineral deposits build up in your pipes, leading to corrosion and causing pressure to increase. Installing a water softener can help prevent plumbing leaks and extend the life of your pipes and water heater.

Make Sure Your Pipes Don’t Freeze

One way to prevent plumbing leaks is to keep your pipes from freezing in the winter. Keep the pipes warm by insulating any exposed portions and sealing off openings that allow cold air to seep through. If temperatures are expected to drop below 25 degrees, keep your home no cooler than 55 degrees. You may also want to let your tap water drip slowly to help prevent freezing.

Replace Washing Machine Hoses to Prevent Plumbing Leaks

The rubber hoses that feed water into your washing machine typically last 3 to 5 years. A faulty or old hose is one of the most common causes of water damage in a home. Regularly inspect your washing machine hose and replace it before it fails. A stainless-steel braided hose is more durable than rubber and still affordable at $10-20 in most home improvement stores.

Plumbing leaks and water damage can be a nightmare to clean up and repair. Use the steps above to prevent leaks in the home.
